Gerry Barnabys Film Review: The Rite

Genre:  Horror Drama Thriller, Contains strong language & strong exorcism

Cert: 18 cert

Parents advised to read before viewing film as some scene may contain scenes unsuitable for younger viewers.

Sex & Nudity: A pregnant woman thrashes and screams "Rape me" (she is crazy and the scene is only a couple seconds)

Violence & Gore: young pregnant woman is retrained at the hands and feet to a hospital bed, she thrashes (we hear bones cracking), she spits at a window in the direction of the Vatican, she scratches the wall with her fingernails making a screeching noise, her face becomes darkened by veins pushing to the skin's surface, large bugs gather around her bed, we see blood on the blanket between her legs, and she thrashes and moans while we watch medical monitors that show the fetus twitch and the heartbeat monitor goes flat (we hear that both the young woman and the baby died).
A young pregnant woman rolls her eyes back in her head, she scratches at the arms of a chair and her scalp frantically, she growls in a deep voice, stretches causing loud cracking sounds, gurgles and retches like she is going to vomit but does not, and yells at a priest attempting to perform an exorcism; he yells at her and then she is calm.
A man stumbles on a sidewalk and falls into a street causing a bicyclist to swerve into the path of a van and thrown into the windshield; she lands on the street (we see her bruised and bloody face and her twisted leg) and she dies.
A man lunges toward a woman and strangles her (her eyes turn bloody) and another man strikes the attacker on the back with a stick; the woman falls to the floor and we see her with a bruise on her neck, but she's OK later.
We see and hear what we are told is people who are possessed by demons: we see photos of a man whose jaw was dislocated, a woman thrashes and has dark circles under her eyes, a woman's eyes turn white and her flesh darkens by veins at the skin's surface, and we hear people yelling in booming, gravely voices, and women screaming.
A man was suddenly strangled in the neck by unseen person's face in his funeral home. It is his dream.
Father Lucas slaps the child in the park.
Nearly an end of the movie, Father Lucas was being possessed by demon.

Story:Inspired by author Matt Baglio’s nonfiction book of the same name, director Mikael Håfström’s supernatural thriller traces the experiences of a young seminary student who discovers the true power of faith after being drafted into the Vatican’s Exorcism School and confronted by the forces of darkness.Follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While he’s in Rome, Michael meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith, uncovering the devil’s reach even to one of the holiest places on Earth.

Likes : all tho i like film that have a dark edge to them there was a few moments i liked but there was some i didn't. Anthony Hopkins is always a good actor he was good in this & he bring a good performance but this film as a whole was just a big let down.
The concept was good, it was dark, creep it was just the slowness of this film this doesn't keep you interested in watch your finding yourself falling asleep watch this film. Based on true events, The Rite somehow fails to send chills down your spine. All one gets to hear are the anti-Christ philosophies: The devil is still alive... The devil is active today... Don't talk of the devil for it brings bad things home... Yes, almost forty minutes into the movie and you get to witness the first scary scene. And scared are we? Not really, except for a couple of scenes when the American seminary student, Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donogue) is attacked by the possessed or when he talks to his already-six-hours-dead dad over the phone. For the rest, it's all about Michael questioning the existence of the devil, aliens, God, sin, religion.overall a very slow film that takes time to get into but i would be prepared to be bored because nothing happens for at least almost the end of the film.

Dislike : This film was way to slow, you only see horror scene at the end or hour an half in to the film, there was just not enough horror in this film . It really was a bad film. This is one film I wouldnt recommend watching if you hate slow film's

Overall : Boring, slow, not really worth rushing to see.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars entertainment, 4 out of 10 for horror & storyline
