Gerry Barnabys Film Review: Red Riding Hood

Genre:  Fantasy  Horror  Mystery, contain strong bloody violence, strong horror fantasy

Cert: 18 cert

Parents advised to read before viewing film as some scene may contain scenes unsuitable for younger viewers.

Sex & Nudity: No onscreen nudity, but the film makes several strong implications of a very aberrant sexual nature.
The protagonist's mother threatens to beat her with a bull-whip which may have sadomasochistic inferences to some.
The protagonist's wardrobe is somewhat revealing with fishnet stockings.
Pedophilia is heavily hinted at, a character has pin-ups of child actress Dakota Fanning on his wall.
The character also has discarded condoms on his floor covered in blood among all his devices of torture, implying that he has tortured, raped and cannibalized many victims beforehand.
The villain is castrated. His penis is seen onscreen as it is devoured by a flock of seagulls.
Another character gropes the protagonist by grabbing her buttocks as the film ends.

Violence & Gore: The film is extremely violent.
A character is ambushed and murdered by the villain and has her arm severed from her body with copious bloodshed.
The protagonist is choked into unconsciousness is a rough fashion.
The villain is actually shown cannibalizing the murdered character; he slices up and satays meat obviously cut from the character's body before eating it with gusto in front of the protagonist as she gags with disgust.
Many horrible things are implied in the villain's house. His house is filled with a dead animal, bloody condoms, a "help" message written on the wall, bloody shackles, knives and swords, tools such as a chainsaw and drill, a bloody cross and what appears to be the corpse of a child stuffed in the ceiling. Though none of this is shown, it's implied that the villain has been using the house to commit unspeakable acts of torture on innocent victims.
The villain is shot by a character with lots of blood.
The protagonist chops off the villain's arm with a katana (samurai sword).
The protagonist castrates the character with the sword. The castration is not shown on screen, but the penis is shown being devoured by seagulls

Profanity: The film contains a fair amount of very profane language, including several uses of the "f-word" and one use of the "c-word" among other milder examples.

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking:A character swigs a beer in one scene.
A character puffs on a joint.

Frightening/Intense Scenes: Despite the film's content, it is staged in a more comedic "gross-out" fashion than a disturbing one.
The sequence where the protagonist is choked and then wakes up in the villain's lair is quite disturbing and intense.
The split-screen sequence is not intense and is staged in a bizarrely comedic fashion, but may deeply offend more sensitive viewers.
The finale where the Wolf is dismembered and castrated is somewhat disturbing.

Story : In Red Riding Hood, Amanda Seyfried plays Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. As panic grips the town, Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast--one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect...and bait.

Likes : Now i thought when i went to watch this film i thought it would be a really bad film but it was really good, i love the darkness of this film, it was more adult story of red riding hood that keeps you guessing to who the wolf is.
i knew half way through who it was but it was enjoyable film to watch & the were wolf senses were just spot on it made kind of seat back in fear as they really made the wolf look seriously evil. Amanda seyfried is looking gorgeous as ever.
This is one film that is worth watch it a modern twist tale of the classic child hood story but turned in to a dark twisted mystery with a romantic feel to it that really enjoyable to watch.

Dislike : Ive got one compliant about this film what the hell are the film critic doing, once again making a film with a 12a cert at the cinema, so kids can go see these films seriously this film was way to violent & dark for kids under 15,i saw parent bring 5 to 6 years to watch this film it would give them nightmares seriously this film is not for kids, its a dark adult story of red riding hood.

Overall : the story line was good but could of been better, the dark feel of the film was spot on,its a worth watching film to watch just don't bring your kids to watch it, it to dark.

Rating: 5 out of 5 horror 8 out of 10 for story line overall feel of horror/fantasy
