The state of Michigan continues offering serious financial incentives for film productions to set up shop within their borders, and now they've landed a seriously big fish. The Michigan Film Office announced today at their website that Transformers 4 has been approved for a film incentive from the state, and will start shooting in metro Detroit this spring.
Along with the announcement comes what amounts to the film's first plot synopsis, which you can read below:
"As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues."
That's all vague enough to be pretty much anything, but it's surprising not to read anything about the character who will be played by Jack Reynor, the youngun who will be replacing Shia LaBeouf for the film's younger viewers. For that matter it's hard to know where there will be a role for Mark Wahlberg, who's been touted as the lead for the new film but who usually doesn't play anyone you'd think of as either a scientist or a businessman. That said, it's not hard to imagine Wahlberg and Reynor as the scrappy rebels who tell the scientists and businessmen to quit messing with the boundaries of technology, since inevitably that'll lead to the return of the robots from space they've been trying to avoid.
Transformers 4 is projected to spend $81 million within the state of Michigan alone, which means that once again we're looking at a massive, massive production-- though maybe a bit smaller than the last one, as Bay has promised. The movie is set for release in June of next year.
Could we be Seeing Unicron in this 4th Transformers?
