Movie News: Hollywood Gets A Clue, 'Green Lantern' Sequel Probably Won't Happen

Alisha Grauso writes:
I know, I know. As paying audiences, it’s sometimes easy to bash Hollywood for its excess and greed, and point out that clearly terrible movies are often greenlit if the studios feel they’ll make enough money. Sometimes, though, Hollywood slows its roll and says to itself, “Self, should we make this movie? No, no, we should not.”
Such is the case with an ill-advised sequel to Green Lantern. It’s proof that even in the midst of a trend in which audiences will flock to see every comic book movie ever and pay lots of money to do it, there can still be the occasional comic book-based flop. (Sidenote: For God’s sake, will someone PLEASE get Ryan Reynolds a decent comic book script he can work with? The man is cursed, I swear it.) Now, I’m not sure I’d categorize the 2011 flick as a complete disaster, but it certainly underwhelmed at the box office. (Speaking of green, how envious do you think DC is right now with their mediocre attempts to jumpstart a viable movie franchise in the wake of Marvel’s mind-blowing success?)
Hollywood seems to have gotten a clue, though, and probably won’t be making a sequel to the mediocre comic flick, with Green Lantern actor Mark Strong pretty much confirming the kibosh:

"I would be surprised if they made a second one, because I’ve heard nothing about it in quite a while now…A lot of people seemed to be confused by [Sinestro] putting on the ring at the end of the movie. They felt that it came out of nowhere. It was intended to relate to where the movies were headed and that, for me, would have been very exciting because putting on of the ring and the suit turning yellow would have been great fun."

”Would have been” seems to be the operative phrase here, as it doesn’t appear likely a sequel will be getting made any time soon. Hal Jordan fans will just have to cross their fingers that the long-rumored Justice League movie will finally get made so he and his alter-ego will finally have the showcase they deserve.
