Gerry Barnaby's Film Review: Mama

Genre: horror warning this film dose contain disturbing scenes that involes kids.

Cert: 18 cert

Parents advised to read before viewing film as some scene may contain scenes unsuitable for younger viewers.

Sex & Nudity:
A man and a woman kiss passionately, they fall back onto a bed and begin to pull each other's clothes off (we see the man's bare side) until they are interrupted when the woman thinks she sees someone in the hallway.
A woman climbs on top of a man in bed and straddles him, and then kisses him (they are both clothed and nothing else is shown).
A woman holds a pregnancy test stick in her hand and is pleased when it shows up negative.
A woman says, "Nice butt, Bruce" to a man on a TV.
A woman wears low-cut tops that reveal cleavage and bare shoulders in most scenes.

Violence & Gore: The supernatural being that we see throughout the movie appears in varying levels of detail: we sometimes see a gray-tinged, human face with limbs that twist unnaturally, and other times we see a wisp of black hair, blackened skin and long skeletal fingers.
A man holds a gun to the back of his young daughter's head and prepares to shoot when he is attacked by a supernatural being, pulled into the air and his neck is broken (we see this in a fuzzy view suggesting that this is what a young girl sees without her glasses).
Two young girls are chased by a supernatural being, one girl hides in her room and a woman comes to find out what's happening: the woman goes into the room where the being appears and chases the three of them out of the room; the woman falls and is "bitten" by the being (we see the woman go pale and gasp, one of the young girls cries for the being to stop, the being approaches the girl and they are interrupted by a noise.
A woman has a dream that shows someone walking through what appears to be a hospital or orphanage, stabbing a woman with a knitting needle (we see her bloody hands and blood on the woman's chest) and taking a child; we see the woman running from armed men that chase her to a cliff where she jumps, crashes into a branch and then falls into the water below.
A woman sees a wispy supernatural being moving on the floor toward her, she screams and it lunges up toward her face (we see the woman later, apparently taken over by the being and her skin is gray-tinged and moths fly out of her mouth).
A young girl eats a moth and we see a headless body in her hands and she has blackened smears around her mouth.
A young girl eats with her hands and snarls like an animal while sitting on the floor.

Profanity: At least one F-word, 5 scatological terms, 2 anatomical terms (1 mild), 2 mild obscenities and 4 religious exclamations.Name-calling (crazy.)

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: A woman drinks beer from a bottle.

Frightening/Intense Scenes:
The scenes with Mama are pretty frightening.
A woman is standing, a supernatural force comes down from the ceiling and disappears in the kitchen. Seconds later, the supernatural force appears right behind her. (Very scary)
A woman goes inside the closet after something goes in. She opens the closet door and starts moving clothes, nothing appears. Then a little girl distracts her and makes her look the other way when a supernatural being appears, on the closet, mad.
The scene where Mama takes Lilly with her off the cliff is quite climactic and can be very disturbing to some viewers.
A woman asks a little girl who's under the bed, then the camera moves down to the bed and we see mama's profile, then Mama goes up to the bed with the woman and the Woman screams. This scene can be very disturbing to Some audiences.
A man is about to shoot a girl, then Mama grabs him and beaks his neck. This scene is really scary.
The last 15 minutes of the movie can be very frightening.
Mama attacks a woman, and later on we see the woman with mama's face and turns violent.
Two little girls go downstairs and find mama at the end of the downstairs hallway. A girl tells the other girl not to look at her because she's mad. The little girl turns to look at mama and mama violently flies over where the girls are. This might be the scariest part of the film.

Story: Guillermo del Toro presents Mama, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night. The day their father killed their mother, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished near their suburban neighborhood. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

Likes : Watching this film Ive got to say its entertaining, it dose have it moments where it dose get a little disturbing special the scene with the kids, but the lack of imagination in this film is just lacking severely.there isnt much i can say that i like about this film other then the fact it was enjoyable to watch but as a horror it fails on the chill factor for me this is why i cant say much on liking this film i was a little dissapointed.

Dislikes : There are serval reason why this film failed to scare, one 10mins in to the film we are introduced to a hidious ghost like creature, now this was a serious mistake in any horror film, because right off the bat youve completely lost the chill & scare factor of the film. You never ever show a ghost or kill at the begin of the film with this type of film, because once the aduince has see the creature there is no scare factor to make you jump or hide behind the sofa because youve already see what it is.the only way to make a good horror of this type is to keep the creature or ghost out of site until almost the very end of the film,it keep the mystery & the chilling scare factor of a horror film, that is where this film completely failed tho it was entertaining it just wasnt scary enough i found myself not bothering to watch it that is now poorly made this film is & it could of been better made for the type of film.

Overall : Failure as a horror, but entertainng film none the less.

Rating: 2.3 out of 5 for entertainment / 4.7 out of 10 for horror/concept
