Gerry Barnaby's Film Review: Dark Skies

Genre:  Horror Sci-Fi Thriller, Warning this film dose contain some intensely frightening violence, terror throughout, sexual material, drug content and language - all involving around young teens & kids.

Film Constance parent advised to read before watching :
Sex & Nudity: A husband and his wife kiss and caress each other while under a bed sheet; we see her bare shoulders and sex is implied.A husband and his wife kiss passionately and hug.
A wife wearing a low-cut nightgown (cleavage, bare shoulders and part of her bare thigh are seen) sits in bed working when her husband wearing a T-shirt and boxers (part of his bare legs are seen) joins her and tries to seduce her (she dismisses his advances). We see a young boy walking outside at night and wearing only brief-style underwear (we see his bare chest, abdomen and back (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
A woman wears low-cut tops and dresses that reveal cleavage and bare shoulders in a few scenes.
A woman wears a tank top that reveals the outline of her nipples, bare shoulders and upper chest in a couple of scenes.A woman wears short pyjamas and her bare legs and shoulders are visible.
A woman is shown wearing only a T-shirt and her bare legs to the upper thigh are shown; when she walks in front of a window we can see through the fabric to the outline of her upper thighs and crotch. Many men and women and boys and girls wear swimsuits at a swimming pool.
Two teenage boys watch pornography on TV; we see a man and a woman kissing, then the man caresses the woman's clothed breast and she moans sexually. We hear sexual moaning coming from behind a door; a teen boy opens the door and finds another teen boy and a teen girl sitting on a bed while watching pornography (we see a man and a woman on the TV and the woman's bare shoulders are visible).A teen boy touches a teen girl's clothed breast, and the girl yells at him and pushes him away.A teen girl kisses a teen boy tenderly.A woman talks about a married couple having an "open relationship."A teen boy talks to another teen boy about sexual activity and asks him what he has done and what he should do.

Violence & Gore: A teen boy finds his father holding a gun and sitting on the floor (blood splatter is shown on the cabinets behind him) next to the boy's mother, who's dead on the floor with a puddle of blood under her; the father puts the gun to his mouth and we hear a gunshot as the boy screams "No!" (it is implied that the man shot himself).A woman with a knife walks through a hallway and into a bedroom.A man rushes to his young son's room and finds him sleeping; he tugs on the boy's shoulder and the boy rolls over to reveal that he is missing his eyes (we see slightly bloody and empty eye sockets) and the man backs away in terror.A bird crashes into a large window and we see it flopping briefly on a rooftop (blood is shown on the window); another bird crashes into the window, and then many birds crash into many windows (we see many dead birds and blood splatters on the windows and walls of the house as people wearing protective gear pick up the bodies). We see a young boy with many bruises and marks all over his abdomen and back at a swimming pool and several people appear alarmed.

Profanity: 6 scatological terms, 4 anatomical terms (1 mild), 5 mild obscenities and 3 religious exclamations.
Name-calling (rat face, weird, brainiac, mutant lizard, the greys, dork, crazy, insane, psycho), exclamations (shut up.)

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking:Two teen boys and two teen girls meet at an empty house and we see one of the boys put a bong on the table with a bag presumably containing drugs (we do not see them smoke.)A woman takes a prescription pill.Men and women drink beer and wine at a cookout.
A man holds an unopened bottle of champagne and says that he and his wife should celebrate.
A man smokes a cigarette in one scene.

Frightening/Intense Scenes: The Greys (aliens) are pretty creepy, and will scare younger kids if taken to see this.Plenty of scary scenes, including a few jump-shock moments and some nightmare-like imagery (including blood, guns, and death.)
There are maybe two jumps in the film; much of the film moves at a slow pace and is more of a psychodrama than a horror film; it is disturbing, intense and unsettling throughout.

Cert: This film was given a 15 cert, due to its contents i believe this should of been a 18 cert because of the intense concept.

Story: From the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister comes Dark Skies: a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family. Written and Directed by Scott Stewart (PRIEST, LEGION) Starring: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett and J.K. Simmons (c) Weinstein

Likes : Ive seen some horror films in my time, not a lot of them have given the shock factor that really frightens you yet apart from this one, Straight off the bat you notice this film is slightly slow your think OK this film is going to be boring but then it throw you a curve ball & seriously put you on the edge of your seat making you want to run behind the sofa & hide. This film Seriously has the concept of a intense, dark & frightening edge of your seat terror that chills you to the bone, horror films don't bother me much but this film seriously leave you check your back when you walk in to a room that is how frightening this film was.Special some scene that serious shock you & make you jump out of your seat with fear.Ive got to hand it to the director ya he made a mistake with paranormal activity & slightly with sidious but he really has done a fantastic job in frightening the audience with this one. Ive never walked away from a cinema feeling scared of something more then watching this film,it has that fear factor because most of of know where not the only planet to have live on & there are aliens out there, this film to have this feel is seriously frightening to know even if you lock yourself in your house they could still get to you.I would recommend watching this film if you love to be scared because this is a dam good film for it.The frighting thing as well is there is a saying that Arthur c Clarke said knowing that we could be alone in the universe or there could be intelligent life out there is both a frightening concept in its self. which is true because if alien's could be like this do we really what to find out who they are.Frightening thing was its was revolved around the kids which made the film more scary because know something sinister & dark wants your kid that would put the fear in any family it happens to.The performance from the stars Keri Russell & Josh Hamilton play the parents in this film really showed the fear as if it was real which really set the tone of a frightening film believable, play the two son's Dakota Goyo & Kadan Rockett performance was just outstanding is showing fear in a child's eye that something is coming for them.J.K. Simmons performance really made the film most frightening when he told the parents everything he had been through & what is coming in a very creep atmospheric way. This is one outstanding film not to be missed.

Dislike: Just a little slow in place, but not a bad film.

Overall : One of the most intense, dark & frightening film's this year, not to be missed.

Rating: 4.3 out of 5 for entertainment / 8.5 out of 10 for frightening scene / dark concept
