Story: Before the United States entered World War I, young Americans went to France to be fighter pilots, joining the Lafayette Escadrille. This fictional version follows a laconic Texas rancher, an eager Nebraska kid, a Black boxer already in France, and a New York swell, as they arrive green for training, get their baptism by fire when German planes ambush them on their first mission, and graduate to heroics. Rawlings, the Texan, falls in love with a young woman he meets at a bordello. Keeping their eyes on them are Captain Thenault and Cassidy, the resident ace, who keeps a pet lion. Can the boys measure up?

Likes : This film is beautiful made with stunning visual effect of real stunt pilot's & special effect that you can't tell which is real & what is C.G.I, it's brilliant done on a budget of Budget:$60,000,000.What makes this film brilliant as well is the fact it based on real history, in 1917 before the America join the 1st world war an elite fighter pilot fought the sky in by planes which as we all know was the era of the red baron & the black falcon two of Germany's top gun pilot's of the era.
During 1917 the French hire whoever they could to fly planes to help protect French's sky's from the German army & a lot of the pilot were British to American guy that bravely trained to fly planes in dog fights to defend a country that weren't their own but did it for the honour.
Watching this film it take you on a nail biting adventure. as a group of pilot try to be the best fighter they can but through a dangerous time as parachutes weren't invented back then they were given a gun to basical shot himself in the head if there plane catches on fire or the plane goes down.
Ya I know hasses right but it was iver that or go down with the plane. The love story ultimately goes nowhere, either, though James Franco and Jennifer Decker both turn in moving performances in this film to bring a light romance side to the story, the story tell the tale of a decadent, sophisticated flyboy of the Lafayette Escadrille who through most parts brings good action scene as they try to shut down the German planes.
The film does not shy away from the ugly aspects of combat nor does it ignore the seamier aspects of the non-flying life although that is nowhere near becoming graphic. The history has been treated accurately - and yes there was really a black pilot as portrayed in the film.
I have seen a number of histories and autobiographical accounts of the African American pilot's  being portrayed as naive & idealistic. That's just the age they lived in - don't judge the characterizations by todays standards because some of the best pilots today are African American most of the wars followed in the sky's brave pilot fought for there country weather they were black or white.
This film is one of the most inspirational film your ever watch with aerial combat scenes & stunning effect to a brilliant all cast performance this is one film that is worth watching.

Dislikes : I think the love story could've been a little better to give the ending that romantic feel side to the film but it didn't really need in a way.

Overall : Brilliant aerial combat scene, romantic on some level, Really good film.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 for entertainment/ 8.1 out of 10 for storyline & real history background
